Glossary

As JSON.

Answer advertising Inferred
Paid placement inside, beside or after an answer written by an AI system, as opposed to a list of links.
Answer engine Inferred
A product that replies to a question with a written answer rather than a ranked list. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Rufus and Google AI Mode are examples.
Context hint Inferred
A plain-language statement of who a product is for and when it fits. Written for a model to read, not a keyword list.
Citation Observed
A brand or source named inside an AI answer. Can be organic or paid. The registry only tracks paid ones.
Feed readiness Inferred
How well a product feed describes items in words a model can reason about: use cases, fit, exclusions, not just price and size.
Scope Inferred
The set of questions where your brand should appear, and just as important, where it should not.
Stack Inferred
The data, content and campaign setup that decide whether an answer engine can pick your brand at all.

Criteria

The definitions behind the stack and scope test. As JSON.

SS-01Product facts a model can read Inferred
Every product has a plain description of what it is, who it is for and when it does not fit. Why it matters: Answers are written from text. If the text is thin, you are not a candidate.
SS-02Structured feed with use cases Platform-stated
Your feed includes attributes such as use case, compatibility and audience, not just price and size. Why it matters: Google, Amazon and Microsoft all say richer feeds improve eligibility for AI placements.
SS-03Broad match or automated campaigns Platform-stated
At least part of your spend runs through broad match, AI Max or Performance Max. Why it matters: This is the stated eligibility path for Google and Microsoft AI placements.
SS-04Defined scope and exclusions Inferred
You have written down the questions you want to appear for and the ones you want to avoid. Why it matters: Conversational queries are long and varied. Without exclusions, spend drifts into irrelevant answers.
SS-05Landing pages that answer the question Observed
The page a click lands on answers the question that triggered it, not just the product category. Why it matters: Clicks from answers arrive with more context. Generic pages lose them.
SS-06Measurement beyond last click Inferred
You can see assisted conversions or run incrementality tests on AI placements. Why it matters: Most platforms do not yet split out AI placement reporting cleanly.
SS-07Presence where your buyers are Observed
At least one platform in the registry is live in a market you sell in. Why it matters: No point building for a format that does not run where you trade.
SS-08Someone owns it Inferred
A named person is responsible for answer placements, with time set aside for it. Why it matters: In our conversations, the teams making progress all had an owner.
